Psalm 20 (NKJV)
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble;
May the name of the God of Jacob defend you;
2 May He send you help from the sanctuary,
And strengthen you out of Zion;
3 May He remember all your offerings,
And accept your burnt sacrifice. Selah
This one has a calm, measured rhythm that at first glance might sound dull, even tedious ... but the steady, soothing cadence is just what I needed at the end of this week.
... answer me in the day of trouble ... we’ve had several of those lately ...
... defend me ... yes, I feel battered on all sides, by illness, stress, failure ...
... send me help and strengthen me ... I could so use the strength ...
... remember all my offerings and burnt sacrifice ... just when I feel like all I’ve done, all I’ve given up, is for nothing ...
4 May He grant you according to your heart’s desire,
And fulfill all your purpose.
5 We will rejoice in your salvation,
And in the name of our God we will set up our banners!
May the Lord fulfill all your petitions.
And fulfill all your purpose.
5 We will rejoice in your salvation,
And in the name of our God we will set up our banners!
May the Lord fulfill all your petitions.
... my heart’s desire? It’s been a long time since I’ve felt that was anything worthwhile. Or believed that my purpose was more than endless wandering. Regardless, our hope and our focus—indeed, our joy—is in the fact that we are called and chosen by the Creator.
6 Now I know that the Lord saves His anointed;
He will answer him from His holy heaven
With the saving strength of His right hand.
He will answer him from His holy heaven
With the saving strength of His right hand.
He does hear ... He does answer ... and His is everlasting strength ...
7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses;
But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.
8 They have bowed down and fallen;
But we have risen and stand upright.
But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.
8 They have bowed down and fallen;
But we have risen and stand upright.
Am I looking for the strength of men to save? Am I leaning on my own wit and intellect to bring success in a particular situation? I was convicted of that this week, as well. Chariots are a marvelous invention, and horses a glorious creature, and the combination of the two were historically a swift method of transportation and mighty tool of war ... but ultimately, do we trust in those to get us where we need to be? Horses fail. Chariots rust. Only our God endures.
9 Save, Lord!
May the King answer us when we call.
May the King answer us when we call.
The completely amazing Sovereign of the universe is ready and waiting for our cry.
