Sandra,
ReplyDeleteThis could just be me...but I feel like a lot of your choices are leaning towards the direction of the death of printed books... (There's only one positive option for bookstores, and even that one sounds like a captain going down with his ship...) Does this by any chance reflect your opinion? I sense a lot of negativity. ;)
Just thought I'd ask! :)

I think the reality is that bookstores already are scraping to survive. Statistics show the double-whammy the economic downturn, coupled with publishers struggling to acclimate to the new iBook-Kindle-Nook, and the established Amazon/Walmart threat, have already taken on independent and chain bookstores (Borders is a case in point). I absolutely believe that bookstores will fade--have faded-- and that only a select few set in the right location will make it.
ReplyDeleteNegative? Depends on how you look at it. Realistic is what I would call it.
That said, it doesn't mean I'm callous toward the plight of independent bookstores. They are some of the best resources for published authors and a great succor on a rainy day.
